Weights and Dimensions: Why size really does matter when it comes to FBA

Being an Amazon Seller means not only developing, creating and marketing your products to the correct audience, it also means making sure your products are getting shipped to your customers in the most cost effective way possible.

If you are selling on Amazon using Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), then you will need to pay fees to cover the costs of fulfillment — the picking, packaging, and shipping of all your orders.

FBA fees are based on the weight and dimensions of your product. For a complete list of the pricing tiers, it’s best to go straight to the source (https://sellercentral.amazon.com.au/gp/help/external/help.html?itemID=201112670&language=en_AU&ref=efph_201112670_relt_201105770).

Amazon allows you to preview your fulfillment fees – you input your product’s dimensions and its outbound delivery rate, and compare them to the chart. Obviously, you want the lowest fees possible, so paying attention to your packaging really matters here.

When your product goes to Amazon’s fulfillment centres, Amazon will verify the weight and dimensions of a product using representative samples. Amazon’s information about a product’s weight and dimensions will be used to calculate fees in the event that there is a difference between Amazon’s information and a seller’s information. Amazon does this whenever you send a brand new product, but can also re-measure and re-weigh existing products during receiving and change the dimensions or weight. Ship happens: What happens when weights and dimensions are miscalculated?

The measurements at the Amazon fulfillment centres are meant to be accurate, but of course, mistakes happen. But those mistakes can cause you to lose sometimes significant amounts of money if your product is kicked into a higher priced tier. This can really add up.

In one case study, a seller sold 700 units per month and the weight was off by 2/10 of a pound. This amounted to $2,000 per month in overcharges – and that’s money that belongs in your pocket.

Amazon will reimburse FBA fees if you confirm with them that the prices were charged using inaccurate weights or dimensions. Be careful – in Seller Central, Amazon notes that “when the weight or dimensions that the seller provides vary from Amazon’s verified measurement, our measurement will govern.”

But here’s the kicker: to be eligible for reimbursement, you must submit your request within 30 days of the date that the fee was charged. (https://sellercentral.amazon.com.au/gp/help/external/GL7U4JFSDXUTQAJ)  So it pays to stay on top of your FBA data – and even more than that, it’s imperative that you have an accurate picture of your weights and dimensions before you start fulfillment.

How Seller Investigators Can Help

Our Weights and Dimensions service is designed to give you accurate information on your packaging measurements:

Simply upload your weights and dimensions to our website via a csv file and our fulfillment calculator will ensure that Amazon’s system accurately reflects the correct packaging measurements of your shipments.

If you have been overcharged on weight and dimensions fees during the past 30 days we will file a case to recoup that money for you.

On an ongoing basis, any time a weight or dimension changes in Seller Central, you will be alerted to this. This prevents errors and overpayments before they happen.

If you have concerns that you’re being overcharged on fulfillment, log in to your account and follow these easy steps:

1. Go to FBA Fees -> Edit Weights & Dims
2. Click Actions -> Edit Dimensions
3. Lastly set the actual dimension of your product.
